Best Kirkwall shore excursions

Start with a direct, small-group day you can actually request — then decide whether coach products or an independent town day fit your hours ashore better.

Direct: small-group with Wow Atour

This is the only excursion we operate and offer for request-to-book on this site. No published price list, no fake “from £…” banners.

Small Group Orkney Charm and Highlights

A six-hour small-group Orkney day for cruise guests — wartime south isles and the Neolithic west Mainland — limited to six guests in a 7-seat vehicle.

Pricing unpublished — request your place; no payment at this stage.

Other ways to spend the day

These are planning options — not inventory we sell or confirm here.

  • Independent

    Independent walk of Kirkwall

St Magnus Cathedral, the Bishop's Palace ruins, and the harbour — realistic if you have a short call or prefer to stay close to the shuttle drop.

  • Third-party / ship

    Ship or third-party coach excursions

Larger coaches covering similar Neolithic and wartime sites. Useful for bigger groups; expect fixed itineraries and longer waits at popular stops.

  • Independent

Self-drive or taxi day to the west Mainland

Possible when hours ashore and transport allow — allow substantial transfer time from Hatston to Skara Brae and back.

How to choose

If your harbour window is roughly seven hours or more and you want Skara Brae plus wartime Orkney without a large coach, request our six-hour tour. If the call is short, stay near Kirkwall: cathedral, museum, and harbour walks still make a strong cruise day.

Read the one-day guide and cruise planner before locking anything in.
