Distances that matter
Hatston to Kirkwall centre is on the order of two miles by road. Kirkwall to the Skara Brae / Bay of Skaill area is roughly 17–20 miles west across Mainland Orkney — often around half an hour each way in good traffic, longer when coaches queue at popular sites. The Brodgar–Stenness cluster sits inland on that west Mainland circuit. Treat these as planning ranges, not guarantees.
About 4 hours ashore
Stay close: cathedral, town streets, harbour, and a café. A quick Barriers / Italian Chapel run is only realistic if transfers are fast and you accept a short visit. Skip a full Neolithic loop.
About 6 hours ashore
Possible for a focused wartime south route or a compressed west Mainland highlight — not both at leisure. Our six-hour guided tour is designed for this length of day only when the published window is longer still (we look for roughly seven-plus hours on the harbour list so a buffer remains).
About 8 hours ashore
The classic cruise-day pattern: west Mainland Neolithic sites plus a taste of Kirkwall or the Italian Chapel, with time to walk and photograph. Still leave margin for Hatston queues on multi-ship days.
Overnight or late departures
When the harbour list shows a departure the following calendar day, usable time can be generous — confirm with your ship, because passenger gangway rules still apply.
