Stay in Kirkwall

St Magnus Cathedral anchors the town — a red-and-yellow sandstone landmark begun in the twelfth century. Nearby, the ruins of the Bishop’s and Earl’s Palaces, the Orkney Museum (Tankerness House), and the harbour front give a full half-day without leaving the capital. Ideal when hours are short or weather is unsettled.

Italian Chapel & Churchill Barriers

South of Kirkwall, the Churchill Barriers link Mainland Orkney toward South Ronaldsay. On Lamb Holm, the Italian Chapel — built by Italian prisoners of war — is a compact, memorable stop. Allow road time both ways and check opening expectations for your date.

West Mainland Neolithic sites

Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar, and the Standing Stones of Stenness sit in the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage landscape west of Kirkwall. Distances are modest on a map but eat clock time once you include interpretation, walking paths, and the return to Hatston. Best when you have a generous call window or a guided day with a clear buffer.
